The Donostia-San Sebastián meeting laid the foundations for this objective, one of the key drivers of the EUSKAMPUS project

The University of the Basque Country, its partners in the EUSKAMPUS, Tecnalia Corporación Tecnológica and Donostia International Physics Center, along with Bordeaux University Consortium which has set up PRES (Pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur – Higher Education and Research Hub) have defined the foundations for the cross-border campus that is going to link both territories, after a work meeting held in Donostia, at the office of the Vice-Chancellor of Gipuzkoa of the UPV/EHU. The setting up of this campus was one of the fundamental concepts of the EUSKAMPUS project, a project that led to the University of the Basque Country receiving the status of International Campus of Excellence last October.

The meeting was held at the highest level and was attended by the  Chancellor of the UPV/EHU, Iñaki Goirizelaia, the Chancellor of the University of Bordeaux I, Alain Boudon, the Chancellor of the University of Bordeaux  II Manuel Tuñón de Lara, and a wide spectrum of institutional representatives, including the Executive Officer of  PRES, Cathy Racault, the Vice-Chancellor of Social Responsibility and University Outreach of UPV/EHU, Amaia Maseda, and Igor Campillo,  EUSKAMPUS Executive Officer. The entities that make up EUSKAMPUS, specifically, Tecnalia Corporación Tecnológica, represented by its Chairman, Joseba Jauregizar, and  Donostia International Physics Center, with Ricardo Díez were also at the meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was the presentation by the PRES of the Bordeaux Universities of its International Campus of Execllence project, while the UPV/EHU did the same with EUSKAMPUS. Both academic institutions then compared the policy proposals for the future construction of a cross-border campus. They also established an agenda for future measures and analysed the joint participation opportunities in the calls of the European Commission such as "Euro-region" or "Knowledge partnerships".

As you will recall, last October, the UPV/EHU EUSKAMPUS project, whose members include the Donostia International Physics Center and Tecnalia Corporación Tecnológica, was awarded the title of the International Campus of Excellence by the Ministry for Education, and after an assessment by an international commission of independent experts.

EUSKAMPUS seeks to establish a leading international hub of training, research, transfer and innovation, and to convert this new concept into a cornerstone of the economic and social transformation of the Basque Country. Then there is also the project to become a technological, scientific and academic benchmark of the European Atlantic Rim. It therefore envisages setting up a cross-border campus in close collaboration with the Pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur [Higher Education and Research Hub) of the Bordeaux Universities.

This working meeting was a fundamental step in the project to set up a cross-border campus between both universities, a goal that is now closer and which will give the opportunity of generating an attractive international research and training project.
